Flutterwave to launch its Kenyan API in October

Payments company Flutterwave, which was launched by Iyin after he left Andela, will launch its Kenyan API (application programming interface) on October 1, 2016. In a series of tweets, the company stated that the launch of the API will effectively bridge“the gap between East Africa & the rest of the world & brings the narrative of Africa as a country closer to reality.”

The API will enable companies in Africa and anywhere across the world accept M-Pesa payments from their East African customers. Simply put, a Nigerian company is settled in Naira when a Kenyan customer pays with M-Pesa. Overseas companies with clients in Kenya need not worry about how to pay or get paid for services too!

At the moment, Flutterwave has given a few companies access to the API. These companies will use it to transact for a month without charge. Once launched, Kenya will become the third country where Flutterwave is live – businesses in Nigeria and Ghana are already benefitting from the platform.

Launched last month, Flutterwave is a digital payments infrastructure that wants to change the face of payments in Africa using APIs. The platform aggregates various payment methods to enable merchants, payment service providers and banks accept and process payments on any channel (Web, Mobile, ATM & POS).

At the time it launched, Flutterwave had transacted more than US$20 million for clients that included Uber Nigeria, Access Bank, Paystack, and Page Microfinance
