African Institute for Mathematical Sciences Expands To Rwanda

The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences Schools Enrichment Center (AIMSSEC) , a not-for-profit organization has collaborated with the Rwandan Government to launch a branch in the country’s beautiful capital city of Kigali.

The AIMS institution champions on transforming mathematical thinking throughout Africa by providing professional development courses for mathematics teachers, subject advisers and field trainers through introductory new mathematics teaching skills, improving subject knowledge and empowering teachers from disadvantaged rural and township communities.

The official launch which took place at the Kigali Convention Center (KCC), was presided over by Rwandan President Paul Kagame as the guest of honor.

Rwanda joins five other African countries where AIMS is operational including South Africa, Ghana, Cameroon, Tanzania and Senegal.

The first AIMS center of excellence was opened in Cape Town, South Africa, founded by Professor Neil Turok in 2003.

President Paul Kagame has said that for Africa to participate meaningfully in the global economy, the continent must build homegrown scientific and technological capacity.

He added, “The African continent seeks progress, there is no better investment in the future than in educating its young people. Investment in the youth, he said, involves the creation of a workforce that will lead the transformation of the continent and can only be done through innovative scientific training and technical advances.”

His views were equally echoed by Thierry Zomahoun, President and CEO of AIMS who said , “We are thrilled to have partnered with the government of Rwanda to continue to nurture Africa’s most talented scientific minds in mathematical sciences, creating opportunities to allow them to contribute to the continent by tangibly developing solutions to Africa’s problems, and fostering collaboration that will reverse the brain drain of our thinkers, problem-solvers and innovators.”
