Top 8 Tech scenes that defined Africa in 2016

Africa is the current hot bed for Technology, as in the whole continent in my own view is the silicon valley! we have had a couple of achievements coming to Technology and innovation this year. Ranging from Angel investors focusing on Africa, Deals being formed between African Startups and the outside world, we innovation our own Technology and championing it by our own selves. Well we are a blessed land. Early this year we’ve had a couple of Tech blogs predict the startups to watch, those that had a promising moonshot idea when they began, Disrupt-Africa , Techmoran, Techcabal, IT News Africa, Venturebeat  and many more. All this blogs have been championing for the growth and creating awareness of the Startups and innovation world of Africa and we are grateful for the works.

Lets take a moment scrabble down to what we think created a scene in Africa.

Andela is one of the Africa’s top leading startups. This year Andela  Received a good sum of funds  from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative LLC.

Ushahidi, which translates to “testimony” in Swahili, was developed to map reports of violence in Kenya after the post-election violence in 2008. Since then, thousands have used our crowd sourcing tools to raise their voice. We’re a technology leader in Africa, headquartered in Nairobi, with a global team. This Year Ushahidi Launched a platform to monitor the Us Elections.

The Health Sector in Africa has been hit by a couple of epidemics from MALARIA ,TB, HIV\AIDS, EBOLA and many more.

Quoting ““Our ultimate goal is to move healthcare from the current reactive state to a predictive state where we can predict if and when individuals would fall ill,”

Kenyan startup Ongair, which has developed a world-first instant messaging aggregator, is increasing its presence in Europe, Africa, South America and Asia as it approaches 700 and more clients.  Mid this year Ongair extended its offices to Hongkong. Some time last year, the company received funding from Hong Kong based VC, Nest late last year to facilitate its expansion into the Asian market.

Ghanaian Tress a passionate community of black women from around the world sharing and discovering new hairstyles! Tress, which launched earlier this year and was incubated at the Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology (MEST) in Accra, is a mobile app for finding hairstyle inspiration, targeted at black women all over the world. Mid this year Tress was among the selected startups to go to silicon Valley for the Y-combinator.

BRCK’s Kio Kit– a wireless lockable charging device -was rated first in the Global SME Category of Awards. The Kio Kit can hold and charge 40 tablets, each of which can run for 8 hours on a single charge.

It is suitable for rural areas without reliable power supply and with limitation in access to digital technology learning platforms.

Rwanda government has partnered with  Silicon Valley’s drone service startup Zipline for blood and medicine deliveries across the country.

 “Through a partnership with the Government of Rwanda, Zipline will deliver all blood products for twenty hospitals and health centers starting this summer, improving access to healthcare for millions of Rwandans,” announced the firm on its website. “Our partnership with Rwanda is just the beginning. Zipline will deliver a wide range of medical products in other countries this year.”

With ridesharing giants like Uber showing the way, numerous ride sharing apps have been popping up sporadically on the continent (teketaxi , mondo ride ,ousta , little cabs  and many more). This report sizes up ride sharing services in Africa to reveal the total number of ride sharing apps in the continent, the number of services per region, the region with the largest number apps, the timeline of ride sharing app launches, the cities with the highest number of apps and what this all signifies.
