Safaricom’s Songa poaches GM from Tecno’s Boomplay

In a move to grow music streaming services in Kenya, Safaricom’s music platform Songa has poached Chinasa Udeala from Boomplay and appointed him General Manager.

The incoming manager was until he joined Songa, the Regional Director East Africa at Tecno’s Boomplay Music where he helped expand the streaming business significantly.

He has previously worked as East Africa Head of Business for Spinlet, Head of Business and Content Strategy Manager East Africa for Africori. The graduate of the University of North London says he hopes to open the platform up to every local artist, so that they can upload their music and create an opportunity to earn revenue.

Under his leadership, the service is expected to launch a new version this month aimed at low end Smartphones. “The new version will be twice as fast, use only small amounts of data and we will also respond to consumer demand for a lower priced product. These are very exciting times I am looking forward to,” Udeala said.

The music streaming was launched earlier this year, with a catalogue of 2.5 million songs from 400,000 local and international artists. It has been going head to head with local streaming services such as Mdundo, Tecno’s Boomplay and international players that include Jay Z’s Tidal, Apple’s iTunes and Spotify
