Microsoft Ventures into cannabis

Its clearly a mysterious move, but lets not be quick to jump into wierd conclusions. Recently one of big companies –  Microsoft has announced that they are getting into the legal weed business. They will be partnering with KIND Financial, a Los Angeles-software based – a  marijuana startup, that allows people who sell weed legally to run their businesses while verifying that they are complying with all the regulations that govern the trade.

WHAT WILL MICROSOFT BRING TO THE TABLE?

Microsoft will be offering tools for tracking all these businesses from “seed to sale tracking” to ensure that they are complying with the rules. They will be using a software that is powered by Microsoft’s cloud platform ‘Azure’ to do this.

WHY WEED BUSINESS?

Since marijuana is legal for medical or recreational use in some US states, Microsoft wants to be the first major tech company to offer full-fledged support for what can be considered to be a lucrative business.

“The goal of this relationship is to leverage each company’s resources to provide State, County, and Municipalities with purpose built solutions for track and trace (‘seed to sale’ in the cannabis industry) Technology.”

Kind said in the statement.

This is is a big deal for Microsoft especially when you consider the fact that major tech companies have shied away from the Marijuana business.

On a side note, something tells me that they are doing all they can to avoid the corporate mid-life crisis that has befallen many tech companies like Yahoo.
