Government warns phone firms that aren’t focusing on remote areas

Tanzanian government issues a warning to the firms deploying mobile services, this arises after it has been noticed they only focus on the urban areas majorly and forgeting the remote areas.

Prof Makame Mbarawa, the minister of works, transport and communication offered a warning stating:

we will not hesitate to penalize those dilly-dallying in implementing projects

responding to a question from Mr. Godfrey Ngimwa (Kalenga CCM).

In his question, Mr Mgimwa (CCM) had complained that a number of residents in his constituency lacked communication services as contracted companies were conducting the exercise at a snail’s pace, sentiments that were  echoed by Mr Suleiman Zedi (Bukene-CCM)Earlier, the deputy minister for Works, Transport and Communication, Mr Edwin Ngonyani, said the government was aware of communication challenges facing people in the constituency, noting however that through UCSAF, the government picked Tanzania Telecommunication Company Limited (TTCL) which was provided with subsidies amounting to $107,968 to undertake the initiative. He said that villages which have not been covered in the first phase of the project will be considered in the second and third stage to be carried out by Viettel, commonly known by its trade name, Hallotel.
