BBOXX expands to Rwanda after securing a US$2 million funding

BBOXX is a venture-backed company developing solutions to provide affordable, clean energy to off-grid communities in the developing world. BBOXX one of the leading solar startups raised US$2 million from Atlas Mara’s Rwandan entity, Banque Populaire du Rwanda (BPR) to expand operations in Rwanda.

With the African problem of Electricity reach in the rural areas, this is going to be of a great impact to the underprivileged society, BBOXX has provided off-grid electricity to more than 350,000 people in 35 countries around the world since its launch in 2010.

with the current population of Rwanda according to worldOmeter is 12,070,613, this meaning that less than half of the country’s population has access to electricity.

in 2016, the BBOXX secured US$20 million in a Series C round to expand in existing markets and launch its products in other markets including Nigeria and Cameroon. In Rwanda, BBOXX  has installed over 20,000 systems, and provide jobs for over 300  people in the society.

“We are excited about the growth potential for the Rwandan residential solar market and the support we are receiving from BPR,  This marks not just the beginning of our relationship with the bank but accelerates the Government of Rwanda’s vision of 40% off-grid household energy access by 2018. BBOXX is poised to inject another $200 million to realize that vision within the timeframe.”

said Justus Mucyo, Head of Retail Operations, Africa.
