Applications open for US$1 million innovateAfrica Fund
Applications are currently being accepted for the US$1 million innovateAfrica Fund, which seeks to fund digital innovations that strengthen and transform African news media.
The fund will support innovations that strengthen audience engagement with African civic media, improve digital news distribution, and those that explore new revenue models for African storytelling.
Selected innovations will receive a combination of seed funding (between $12,500 to $100,000) technology support and expert mentorship.
The tech support will be received from civic technology laboratories across the continent while startup support and one-on-one mentoring will be provided by some of the world’s top media experts.
“Citizens need reliable and actionable information to make informed decisions. A strong media remains amongst the most effective ways for giving citizens both information and a voice, and we are therefore keen to help journalists be as digitally savvy as possible,”said Justin Arenstein, Code for Africa director.
Applications to access the fund, which opened today, September 1 2016, will close on December 1, 2016. The fund is open to both mainstream media organisations and individual innovators.
Code for Africa (CfAfrica) manages the innovateAfrica Fund as part of the International Center for Journalists’ (ICFJ) wider data journalism initiative in Africa.
