Afrostream Has Launched In 24 African Countries

YC-backed video streaming service Afrostream, has launched in 24 African countries. Out of the 24 countries, 22 are french-speaking while the other 2 are portuguese-speaking.

Previously available in France, Belgium, Switzerland, and Luxembourg, Afrostream is now available in the following countries; Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cape Verde, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Republic of the Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Niger, Sénégal, Seychelles, and Togo.

Afrostream started with a Facebook page in January 2014, and took part in the 2015 batch of Y-Combinator’s incubation programme. Then they launched in four European countries in September of 2015, where they charged €7 per month subscriptions. The service got 2,000 subscribers to sign up before its launch and raised up to $100,000 in 4 weeks.

According to the co-founder and CEO, Tonjé Bakang, “Streaming services are on the rise in Africa and we are proud to be able to offer premium international content and premium local content to subscribers. Our catalog has been carefully selected to include documentaries, kids programming, films, series, and more, all designed to appeal to the varied tastes of household members of all ages.”

Afrostream is offering 2-day subscriptions for 500 FCFA, 1,000 FCFA for 7 days, 3,000 FCFA for one month and 23,000 FCFA for a year.
